Lection 1: Current

Exercises

In the following exercises, I will give some of the currents on the lines. The current on line a is Ia, the current on line b is Ib and so on.
I give the current regarding the direction of the arrows, so it is perfectly normal to come across negative currents.
Please calculate the missing current. If you are sure you found the solution, hover your mouse over the picture to see the solution with a short explanation.

How to read the solution and the explanation:

When you think you have found the solution, you can move your mouse over the picture and rest it there until you see a text appear with the solution and an explanation. First you will see the solution to the question asked. Then on the next three or four lines you will see an explanation on how to calculate this solution. So we have a problem, where we are given Ia=7A, Ic=-2A, Id=-5A and we need to calculate Ib. The solution and explanation will look like:

Solution: Ib = 4A
Why: Ia - Ib + Ic - Id = 0
Ia + Ic - Id = Ib
7A - 2A + 5A = Ib
4A = Ib
The first line is the solution to the question. On the second line is the current equation according to Kirchhoff's current law. The sign used in this line refer to the direction of the little arrow in the picture. So if the arrow is pointing towards the node, we have a +, else we have a -.
In the third line, the values for the current are used and we consider the true direction of the current. This means, for example, Ic is pointing towards the node, but we know the value to be Ic=-2A. Therefore, if we use the values, we replace +Ic with -2A.
